About the Artist
Deborah Zlotsky’s process is full of detours and contingencies; she creates systems of interrelationships through cycles of construction, accumulation, rupture, and repair. Each work materializes out of a friction between intention and coincidence, much like the daily processing and deciphering required to be in the world. In a 2017 catalog essay on recent paintings, Carmen Machado, author of Her Body and Other Parties: Stories, wrote “Deborah Zlotsky’s paintings are, at their essence, a convergence: of Renaissance images and pop art, of the past and present, of science fiction and reality, of physicality and illusion.” Zlotsky is represented by Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York and Robischon Gallery in Denver. She has received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in painting, and recent residencies fellowships include the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Bemis Center for the Contemporary Arts. Zlotsky’s work is in variety of public, private and corporate collections in the US and abroad, including Nordstrom, Capital One, Progressive Insurance, the Waldorf Astoria, and the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection. Zlotsky has a BA in the History of Art from Yale University and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Connecticut. She teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design and lives in upstate New York.
